Is it common practice in the UK to throw antibiotics at just about any case of pharyngitis, as it unfortunately is here in the U.S.?
No, usually prescribing policies are relatively restrictive. The feeling is that there is minimal benefit to treating most cases of simple pharyngitis which is offset by the risks of increasing antimicrobial resistance.
